Oil-based drilling fluid is a drilling fluid system used in onshore and offshore drilling operations. Oil-based drilling fluid is usually composed of oil as the continuous phase and water as the dispersed phase in conjunction with supporting additives. The continuous phase (also called oil-based) can be diesel, kerosene, mineral oil, etc. The dispersed phase is always water and in the dispersed phase contains various reinforcement additives such as weighting additives, viscosity enhancers, brines, lubricants, rheology modifiers, etc. There are various grades of oil-based drilling fluids. For example, a drilling fluid containing 90-95% oil is called “True oil-based drilling fluid.” A drilling fluid containing 60-90% oil and 10-40% water is considered “Invert emulsion mud.”

Invert mud can be formulated with mineral oil or other low-environmental-risk oil substitutes. In this mud, water and chemicals are used together to control viscosity and fluid loss. Invert emulsion muds provide good hole protection and are the most used oil mud.

Oil-based drilling muds provide many benefits to enhance drilling efficiency and performance with little maintenance. They provide maximum lubricity and corrosion and shale inhibition performance and offer maximum drill bit penetration rate with superior contaminant tolerance. Depending on the drilling project, oil-based drilling fluid systems are adjusted to offer superior performance and cost efficiency. A typical oil-based mud consists of base oil, brine, an emulsifier, and a wetting agent.

Depending on the operation needs, viscosity modifiers and filtration control additives are also added. Other supplemental additives may be added to address specific drilling challenges.

At Centum, we formulate and supply various cost-effective sustainable oil-based drilling fluids-true oil-based, and invert emulsion. We use sustainable and readily biodegradable oils as base fluid (continuous phase) and water as dispersed phase medium. We disperse various sustainable, readily biodegradable reinforcement additives in the dispersed phase. Centum’s onshore and offshore oil-based drilling fluids offer ultimate performance and sustainability compared to non-sustainable petroleum-based versions. We help oilfield companies and operators to meet ESG and sustainability targets without compromising performance. At Centum, we use the latest available technology to custom formulate oil-based drilling fluids for specific drilling projects.

BioDyne

Sustainable ultra-performance oil-based drilling fluid system BioDyne is Centum’s latest innovation. BioDyne is engineered to provide a sustainable, high-performance alternative to petroleum oil-based drilling fluids. Centum’s oil-based drilling fluid BioDyne does not use any petroleum solvents; instead, it uses sustainable non-petroleum-based solvents as an alternative. The non-petroleum-based oils used in the formulation are readily biodegradable and do not pose any environmental risks or toxicity to any living species. Our oil-based drilling fluids do not contaminate seawater or land and help meet ESG targets implemented by governments worldwide. Centum’s BioDyne is a cost-effective solution for onshore and offshore drilling operations. At Centum, we custom formulate BioDyne to meet your specific drilling operation needs. Depending on drilling project needs, BioDyne formulation contains 60-95% sustainable oils, and 5-40% contains water. Various reinforcement additives, such as weighting additives, viscosity modifiers, temperature and pressure stabilizers, shale inhibitors, corrosion inhibitors, scavenger chemicals, rheology modifiers, etc., are added in the dispersed phase. Our oil-based drilling fluids are an all-in-one, ready-to-use complete solution, designed to provide smooth drilling operation in any challenging geological condition without interruption. Using BioDyne, a drilling engineer does not need to choose between performance and sustainability, it is engineered to provide ultimate performance and smooth drilling without compromising sustainability. Perhaps the most valuable advantage of BioDyne is cutting operational costs, it helps to cut down oilfield operational costs significantly. Our formulated drilling fluids are especially suitable for high-temperature and pressure drilling operations and provide advanced shale inhibition and stabilization.
