Viscosity modifiers are a class of additives that are used to reduce or modify the viscosity of a fluid or fluid mixture.

In oilfield drilling operations, a wide range of drilling fluids are being used at various stages. Each drilling fluid has various viscosity strengths depending on its usage depth. Therefore, modifying the drilling fluid’s viscosity depending on needs becomes crucial. Depending on the fluid properties, a range of viscosity modifier additives are added to the drilling fluids to modify viscosity to a desired range. Conventionally, the viscosity of a drilling fluid changes when subjected to high temperature, high pressure, and changes in other external conditions. Having such a viscosity increase also cause lost circulation, and that force drilling operation to stop temporarily. During onshore and offshore well-drilling operation, the temperature and pressure of the drilling fluid increases significantly, and as a result, drilling fluid viscosity also increases. Viscosity modifier additives are added to the drilling fluids to prevent such viscosity increase.

A suitable viscosity modifier must inhibit drilling fluid viscosity change without affecting other essential fluid and rheological properties. Upon addition of a viscosity modifier, the drilling fluid must exhibit flat viscosity to smooth the drilling operation. Oilfield chemical suppliers offer a range of viscosity modifier additives. However, not all of them perform as they should due to chemistry mismatch and immiscibility in the drilling fluid medium. This often causes severe damage to the drilling operation.
