One of the significant causes of drilling failure in offshore and offshore oilfield drilling operations is ineffective shale inhibition.
Effective shale stabilization or inhibition prevents water-sensitive shale swelling and hydration during deep well-drilling operations. Effective shale inhibition is particularly challenging when drilling in highly rocky geological conditions. A water-sensitive rock contains various clay or shale particles with varying water absorption properties. When those water-sensitive clay particles encounter water, they start absorbing water, and as a result, they swell.
This shale or clay swelling and hydration causes issues like borehole instability, stuck pipe, high torque, and drag, increases drilling fluid viscosity, prevents the smooth flow of the drilling fluid, etc., delays drilling operation significantly, and increases operational cost significantly. Shale inhibitors and stabilization additives are added to the drilling fluids to prevent any catastrophic drilling failure. Adding a shale inhibitor limits water interaction with the sensitive clay/rock particles. Various shale inhibitors limit water penetration into clay particles, which helps to prevent water absorption by the clay particles and swelling or hydration. Adding a suitable shale stabilizer additive to the drilling fluids can prevent this clay particle hydration and swelling. A wide range of shale inhibitors are available on the market, and they all work differently. Some of them are effective to certain types of shale or clay particles, and some aren’t.
At Centum, we research the causes of shale or clay particle hydration and swelling. We study unusual and usual rocks found during onshore and offshore well-drilling, and we study their water absorption and swelling nature in the lab. After years of research and development, we formulated the most effective shale inhibitor and stabilizer additive blends. Centum’s innovative shale stabilizer additive blend, ShaleShield, offers advanced-level shale inhibition through well- known and scientifically proven mechanisms. At Centum, we prioritize the performance-first approach while considering the drilling engineer’s ESG and sustainability targets.
Our formulations are based on three core principles- performance, sustainability, and cost saving. ShaleShield is a performance new-generation shale inhibitor and stabilizer additive that offers advanced-level clay/shale stabilization and inhibition through well-proved and scientifically tested mechanisms. ShaleShield is designed to offer maximum shale inhibition and stabilization in challenging onshore and offshore drilling operations. The raw materials in our shale inhibitor are locally sourced and readily or ultimately biodegradable. Our shale inhibitor additive blend prevents shale swelling and hydration by ion exchange and coating the shale/clay particles. ShaleShield is designed to perform in any offshore and onshore geological conditions. Our shale stabilizer poses no environmental risk, does not contaminate soil and water, and helps meet driller's ESG goals and regulatory restrictions.
