In chemical science, degreasing is the removal of greasy and oily substances from various surfaces of various morphology. Degreasing different surface morphologies and objects is an integral part of the cleaning, production, and purification processes, particularly in continuous operation, fabricating, or assembling metal parts, oilfield and production operation, heavy machinery, aircraft, appliances, automotive, electronics, railroad, etc. Degreasing removes water-insoluble substances such as grease, fats, oils, waxes, carbon deposits, fluxes, tars, asphaltene, etc. The most common degreasing chemicals for oilfield operation and production are petroleum solvents and detergent-based products that use a combination of chemical concentrates suspended in a liquid base. Various organic hydrocarbon solvents are widely used for oilfields and other degreasing applications. However, the effectiveness of the available products and solutions are varied.

In oilfield operation and production, hydrocarbon solvent-based degreasing is commonly used. In today’s solvent-based degreasing products, a cleaning agent (e.g., surfactant) in typically petroleum hydrocarbons is applied directly to the surface of the oilfield and production equipment and machinery. The degreasing process removes heavy oil, asphaltene, wax, grease, dirt, loose impurity particles, and any other contaminants on the surface of the equipment, parts, and components. This degreasing process prepares the equipment and machinery for further smooth operations until the next degreasing phase. Companies offer various degreasing chemicals and products for oilfield operations and production processes. However, most of them are petroleum solvent-based degreasers, adversely affecting the environment and eventually contaminating seawater and land and, importantly, pose a significant health risk to the workers. Additionally, the surfactants added to the petroleum solvent-based degreasers also cause tremendous harm to the environment, fish, and living species.
