Scavenging additives are a type of chemical that defuse or deactivate highly reactive ions and molecules in gaseous or solution phase form from the medium.

Scavenging chemicals react with highly chemically active unwanted molecules and ions, then deactivate and remove them from the system. In oilfield operations, various scavenger additives are added to the drilling fluid and production chemicals to remove reactive impurities such as CO2, SO2, H2S, S, and O2 from the borehole and production chamber. Accumulating these reactive gaseous species often causes explosions, fire hazards, and, most importantly, corrosion. These reactive impurities in an oilfield drilling operation often cause severe explosions and corrode the drilling equipment and production pipe. Therefore, removing them from the system is crucial before they cause any serious issues during production operations.

The effectiveness of the scavengers mostly depends on their internal chemistry and scavenging mechanism. The primary mechanisms for scavenging and removing CO2, SO2, H2S, S, and O2 are chemical reactions and adsorption.
