A lubricant is a chemical substance that helps to reduce friction between surfaces in mutual contact. It may also have the function of transmitting forces, transporting foreign particles, and cooling the surfaces. A perfect oilfield drilling lubricant must ease high friction and high torque, transfer heat, carry away cuttings and debris, and protect against wear and tear of the drill bit and drilling equipment during deep-well drilling operations in various extreme conditions. Lubricants used in oilfield drilling must have a high boiling point, low freezing point, high thermal and hydraulic stability, high oxidation resistance, and prevent corrosion.

Generally, the friction coefficient of oil-based drilling fluid is around 0.08, while the friction coefficient of water-based drilling fluid is around 0.2, much higher than that of oil-based drilling fluid.

Therefore, lubricants are essential in reducing the friction coefficient of water-based drilling fluids. More attention must be given when formulating water-based lubricants. Conventionally, lubricants are divided into solid, ester, fatty acid-based, and alcohol-based.
